A multifaceted artist and guru, Adyar K. Lakshman was a leading figure in Bharatanatyam. Born on December 16, 1933, in Chitoor District, Andhra Pradesh, he demonstrated exceptional talent for rhythm and music from a young age.

Lakshman began his training at Kalakshetra at the age of 11, studying dance, music, and mridangam under Rukmini Arundale. He also learned from notable masters, including Ambu and Chandu Panicker, Mylapore Gowri Ammal, and Tanjore Rajagopala Iyer.
